Love the idea of a “Oaxaca High Altitude Cycling Camp” except I also want one for amateur cyclists who want to explore Oaxaca on 2 wheels.

I always chirp on about how biking around NYC was the best way to explore the city - (1) for the efficiency and (2) to take photos along the way. Oaxaca is surely a different atmosphere but I would love to do the same. Maybe I just have to up my miles this summer and I’ll be ready by winter.

Yes, the master plan is to eventually open a cycling cafe with a fleet of rental bikes (and e-bikes) with optional tours for all kinds of riders. The magic of cycling in Oaxaca is that it gives you access to hundreds of remote villages and wild landscapes in one of the most ethnobotanically diverse regions in the world. I have some qualms about contributing more tourism to communities that value their autonomy, but I also know they generally welcome the extra income it would give them. I’d like to start slow to work in partnership with locals and do more good than harm.

When young people get all nihilistic and misanthropic I just point out that our species invented the bicycle.

Ha, I love that. But what took us so long? After the invention of the wheel, the bicycle doesn’t seem like such an imaginative leap.

Better late than never. And I don't see any other species doing any better.

Go humans!

How have I not heard the Orbea story until now?!?!? I guess you are Stack blocking me, holding out on stories for original content huh? Had the story ended with you giving that bike to a young broke barista looking to get into biking, I would have cried. My wish is that more people know what it feels like to hop on your bike after a day of work, it’s the best way to decompress, as long as it’s mostly downhill home. Strangely, it’s not always a vibe when I’m commuting to work so I’m guessing destination does make a difference. Love love the Orbea story, it flowed like a river and it swept me along for the ride. #seemynote

Ha, are you sure I hadn't told you about Alex and Red Ruby (the bike)? Alex has a guiding company in Hawaii now and I've been wanting to get over there to catch up with him. (https://bigislandbiketours.com/about-us/)

He wasn't a barista, but I did end up selling the bike to a 16-year-old who came over with his mom, and he was so stoked to get a road bike that used to belong to a pro. I hope he's still using it.

Thanks for the sweet comment, and I totally agree about post-work cycling decompression.
